Notes
Note 108726: NOTE-Applies only on ladders having side rails and rungs collapsed and folded parallel to each other, designed for permanent attachment to the side of residential buildings.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Bundle collapsed residential escape ladders tightly with edge protection on rung ends; apply at least two straps per bundle and mark each as “Bundle X of Y.”
- Palletize when possible: place bundles flat on a skid sized to prevent overhang, block and band to the deck, and use corner boards to resist strap crush on aluminum.
- Separate metal-to-metal contact with corrugated pads or foam so aluminum and steel components don’t rub during transit and create scuffs or claim issues.
- On the BOL, cite NMFC 108725 and reference Note item 108726; add “Emergency Escape Ladders—Collapsed, Bundled, Non-Hazmat” for quick carrier recognition.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 removes density math, giving fast, consistent LTL quotes and fewer reclass surprises.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat surcharges or special paperwork.
- Collapsed bundles reduce cube and touchpoints, improving handling efficiency and lowering damage risk for metal components.
- Clear alignment with the NMFC note (item 108726) helps prevent inspection delays, fines, and OS&D disputes.
