Notes

Note 108852: NOTE-Applies only on ladders having two or more steps, such as used for maintenance or stockroom work.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Palletize the folded stepladder with caster wheels locked and immobilized. Block under each wheel, band through the side rails, then stretch-wrap to prevent rolling during cross-dock moves.
  2. Protect critical surfaces: cap the top platform and steps with corrugated pads, add corner boards along uprights, and use at least two steel or heavy poly bands to secure to the pallet.
  3. Load orientation matters. Face steps inward toward the pallet center to keep the center of gravity inside the footprint and avoid overhang that can catch conveyors or forklifts.
  4. Shipping multiple units? Nest back-to-back with foam or honeycomb separators, strap as a single bundle on a long pallet, and mark Do Not Stack if caster brackets protrude.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Accurate use of NMFC 108850 for wheeled metal stepladders curbs reclass fees and invoice disputes tied to caster-type notes and packaging expectations.
  • Non-hazardous status streamlines paperwork and speeds quotes, helping dispatch teams tender LTL faster with fewer approval loops.
  • Wheel immobilization and targeted padding reduce rung and caster-fork damage, lowering OS&D claims and preserving resale value on industrial units.
  • Palletized, package-ready ladders move cleaner through terminals, cutting handling time and potential accessorials associated with awkward, rolling freight.
