How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Select the correct NMFC package type (257, 1161, 1288, or 2097) for your bulb packs and document it on the BOL. Use cell dividers, molded trays, or foam to isolate each bulb inside a sturdy corrugated carton.
- Determine density to set the class per Item 170: weigh the sealed box and calculate cubic feet, then divide weight by cube. Example: 35 lb master carton at 3.2 cu ft = 10.9 PCF.
- Palletize to protect fragile lamps: keep boxes upright, prevent overhang, add corner boards and a rigid top sheet, and stretch-wrap with at least 50% overlap. Mark Fragile and This Side Up where appropriate.
- Avoid mixed loads with heavy or liquid commodities directly above bulbs. If top-load risk exists, add cones or spacers and confirm carrier acceptance to prevent damage-related delays.
