Classification Details

NMFC Description Class
109850.00 Lightbulbs (Light Bulbs), in boxes or Packages 257, 1161, 1288 or 2097, subject to Item 170 and having a density in pounds per cubic foot of:

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Select the correct NMFC package type (257, 1161, 1288, or 2097) for your bulb packs and document it on the BOL. Use cell dividers, molded trays, or foam to isolate each bulb inside a sturdy corrugated carton.
  2. Determine density to set the class per Item 170: weigh the sealed box and calculate cubic feet, then divide weight by cube. Example: 35 lb master carton at 3.2 cu ft = 10.9 PCF.
  3. Palletize to protect fragile lamps: keep boxes upright, prevent overhang, add corner boards and a rigid top sheet, and stretch-wrap with at least 50% overlap. Mark Fragile and This Side Up where appropriate.
  4. Avoid mixed loads with heavy or liquid commodities directly above bulbs. If top-load risk exists, add cones or spacers and confirm carrier acceptance to prevent damage-related delays.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Density-driven rating lets you optimize costs: tighter inner packs and right-size cartons can move lightbulbs into a lower class and reduce LTL spend.
  • Using NMFC-recognized packaging (257/1161/1288/2097) reduces reweigh/reclass fees and lowers claim risk for fragile glass or LED bulbs.
  • Non-hazardous commodity status streamlines carrier selection and paperwork, accelerating quotes for rollouts, relamps, or facility maintenance buys.
  • Standardized carton footprints improve pallet cube and trailer utilization, cutting per-unit freight while maintaining protection during transit.
