How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Reference NMFC 110020 and Class 55 on the BOL, and state “Acid Chamber Residuum, dry” with the exact packaging (boxes, bags, or drums) to avoid reclass.
  2. For boxes: use double‑wall cartons with sealed liners; band to a 48x40 pallet, shrink-wrap, and add corner boards to keep the load top‑loadable and dry.
  3. Keep moisture out. Mark pallets “Keep Dry” and separate from food-grade cargo; for drums or bag pallets, add a poly-top sheet and stretch-wrap to the deck.
  4. Provide accurate gross weight and an SDS for reference. Density isn’t required for rating, but precise weight helps prevent reweigh fees.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Class 55 rating on a dense commodity often delivers lower LTL rates by maximizing weight per cube.
  • Non-hazardous status removes hazmat surcharges and special documentation, speeding carrier acceptance.
  • Clear, fixed classification reduces reclass and inspection disputes, cutting accessorial risk and invoice variance.
  • Flexible packaging (boxes, bags, drums) enables consolidation strategies and easier inventory-driven ship planning.
