How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 110030 and “Acid Chamber Residuum, liquid or paste, in drums” on the BOL, and select Class 55 for rating.
- Match the drum to the state: closed-head drums for liquids, open-head with gasketed lids for paste; tighten bungs/rings to spec.
- Palletize drums upright with drum boards or cradles, band and stretch-wrap with top caps, and place absorbent pads or a tray liner under the load.
- Provide per-drum count and weights, note liquid or paste on paperwork, and request liftgate or drum-handling gear for dense, heavy units.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Class 55 keeps base rates competitive for dense industrial residues, improving LTL cost predictability.
- Non-hazardous status helps avoid hazmat surcharges and expands carrier options and service lanes.
- Single, fixed NMFC listing reduces reclass risks and billing disputes, accelerating quoting and tendering.
- Robust drum packaging lowers leakage and OS&D exposure, protecting margins and on-time delivery KPIs.
