How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. List NMFC 110080, Class 55 on the BOL when shipping antimonial lead pigs or slabs that are packaged (boxed, crated, or palletized). Loose bars may not qualify.
  2. Build stable unit loads: interlock layers of pigs/slabs, band in both directions to a 4‑way pallet, add corner boards, and stretch wrap to prevent movement in LTL.
  3. Mark gross weight on each package and keep bundles within pallet ratings (commonly 1,000–2,500 lb). Ensure fork access and avoid pallet overhang.
  4. Separate from foodstuffs and dusty goods, place slip sheets under metal to reduce abrasion, and label as “Lead Alloy—Antimonial” per plant policy for quick ID.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Lower landed cost: Class 55 suits dense antimonial lead, often pricing more favorably than higher-class metals on a per-hundredweight basis.
  • Faster, cleaner rating: Simple classification—no density calculation—reduces reclass risk and speeds quotes, tenders, and carrier acceptance.
  • Wider carrier options: Non-hazardous alloy status expands lanes and capacity choices, improving schedule reliability and rate shopping.
  • Fewer claims: Clear “in packages” requirement encourages standardized crating or palletizing, limiting OS&D and accessorials tied to special handling.
