How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. List NMFC 110140 and Class 55 on the BOL; this is a fixed-class lead bar/block/ingot in packages, so do not rate by density.
  2. Bundle ingots or bars tightly, band with steel or heavy poly strapping using corner protectors, and palletize (e.g., 48x40) with stretch wrap to contain oxide dust.
  3. Keep stack height low (≤48 in) and mark each bundle with net weight; block and brace inside trailers to prevent shifting from the freight’s high mass.
  4. Separate from food or pharma freight and provide an SDS for lead when requested; verify forklift capacity since small cubes can exceed 2,000+ lb easily.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Predictable pricing: single Class 55 rating eliminates density disputes and reclass fees.
  • Lower cost per pound: very dense packages optimize trailer space and limit cubic minimum charges.
  • Fewer claims: strapped, palletized bundles resist edge damage and slippage, reducing handling touchpoints.
  • Simpler booking: non-hazardous status avoids hazmat paperwork and fees, widening carrier options.
