How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 110140 and Class 55 on the BOL; this is a fixed-class lead bar/block/ingot in packages, so do not rate by density.
- Bundle ingots or bars tightly, band with steel or heavy poly strapping using corner protectors, and palletize (e.g., 48x40) with stretch wrap to contain oxide dust.
- Keep stack height low (≤48 in) and mark each bundle with net weight; block and brace inside trailers to prevent shifting from the freight’s high mass.
- Separate from food or pharma freight and provide an SDS for lead when requested; verify forklift capacity since small cubes can exceed 2,000+ lb easily.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: single Class 55 rating eliminates density disputes and reclass fees.
- Lower cost per pound: very dense packages optimize trailer space and limit cubic minimum charges.
- Fewer claims: strapped, palletized bundles resist edge damage and slippage, reducing handling touchpoints.
- Simpler booking: non-hazardous status avoids hazmat paperwork and fees, widening carrier options.
