How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm density meets the 30+ lb/ft³ threshold for Class 60. Example: a 1,200 lb box measuring 20×24×18 in is 5.0 ft³, giving 240 lb/ft³—solidly within this item.
- Package for weight, not volume: use heavy-duty boxes or steel/plastic drums with poly liners to control lead dust, then band securely to a pallet with edge protection and full stretch wrap.
- Mark documents and freight: “Lead Alloy Castings/Extrusions NOI – NMFC 110230 – Class 60 – Non-Hazardous.” Include handling unit count plus accurate gross and net weights to avoid reweighs.
- Load low and keep centered. Place these dense pieces on the trailer floor or bottom tier, avoid overhang, and keep them away from light, crushable freight.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Leverages Class 60 for high-density lead shapes, typically producing better LTL rates than lighter, higher-class commodities.
- Non-hazardous status removes hazmat fees and paperwork, widening carrier options and speeding tendering.
- Properly lined, banded, and labeled units reduce reclasses, reweighs, and damage claims—cutting accessorials and dispute time.
- Accurate density documentation improves quote precision and helps qualify for sharper tariffs or FAK programs with core carriers.
