How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Note NMFC 110370 and Class 55 on the BOL; this item is rated by description, so no density calculation is needed.
- Palletize heavy pigs or slabs on 4-way hardwood or steel-reinforced pallets rated for the load; band tightly with steel strapping and use edge protectors.
- Distribute weight evenly and block/bracer inside trailers; avoid double-stacking dense lead to prevent deck damage and tip risk.
- Keep lead away from food-grade freight and cover with poly sheeting to contain surface dust; label as lead metal, non-hazardous, for quick dock clearance.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing from a fixed Class 55—quotes stay consistent without density changes.
- Non-hazardous metal means no hazmat fees, simplifying tendering and reducing total landed cost.
- Dense, damage-resistant form lowers claim exposure and OS&D, improving service reliability.
- Efficient handling when palletized and banded reduces dock time, accessorial risk, and detention.
