How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 110470 and Class 70 on the BOL; no density, dimensions, or item sub selection needed for rating.
- For lead tape on reels, cap cores, secure the tail with tape, then shrink-wrap the reel and place it in a corrugated box or crate with blocking to prevent roll.
- For lead wedges, nest pieces tightly, interleave with fiber sheets, and poly-bag to contain residue; use a plywood‑lined crate for heavier sets and brace internally.
- Palletize with double‑wall boxes, low‑stretch shrink wrap, and steel banding; mark center of gravity and keep weight centered to avoid tip‑overs during cross‑dock handling.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: fixed Class 70 eliminates density disputes and reclass fees.
- No hazmat surcharges: lead articles are non-hazardous, reducing paperwork and accessorial costs.
- Packaging flexibility: boxes or crates (and acceptable drums/reels) fit standard carrier rules, cutting exception handling and claim exposure.
- Better cost per pound: dense lead allows high weight on a single pallet, lowering transportation cost relative to cube-driven minimums.
