How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use heavy-duty pallets or steel skids; center the weight low, band with steel strapping and edge protectors, and block to stop shifting during LTL handling.
- Record exact scale weight by pallet and list “Lead counterbalance weights, NOI – NMFC 110490, Class 70” on the BOL; this class is not density-based.
- Add a non-porous liner or poly sheeting under the weights to prevent surface staining and isolate from food or fragile freight in mixed loads.
- Keep forks accessible on at least two sides and avoid stacking; confirm lift equipment capacity since lead counterweights are compact yet very dense.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 rating streamlines rating and quoting, reducing reclass risks and unexpected carrier adjustments.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and documentation, shortening booking time and cutting accessorial costs.
- Dense freight uses minimal cube, often improving LTL cost per hundredweight when consolidated into fewer, properly strapped pallets.
- Rugged metal pieces have low damage susceptibility when packaged correctly, lowering claim rates and preventing costly project delays for machinery or elevator installs.
