How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use sturdy boxes with tight fill: bag the lead weights in inner poly sleeves to contain dust, add dividers or foam to stop shifting, and seal seams with reinforced tape.
- Declare true shipment weight on the BOL; this class is not density-based, so accurate total weight (carton plus contents) keeps the Class 60 rating clean.
- Palletize low and secure: choose a 4-way pallet, keep heavy cartons centered, add edge boards, and band and wrap to prevent movement during LTL cross-docking.
- Mark paperwork clearly: “NMFC 110495 – Drapery Weights, Boxed – Class 60.” Include piece and pallet counts to reduce inspections and avoid reclass delays.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Lower costs from Class 60: dense, boxed lead weights often rate better than lighter goods, improving LTL freight spend for curtain and staging suppliers.
- Faster quotes and fewer disputes: fixed class (no density math) streamlines pricing, reduces audit exposure, and speeds tendering during peak seasons.
- Reduced claims risk: compact, boxed metal weights are resilient; proper bracing and palletization minimize OS&D events and chargebacks.
- Operational simplicity: a single packaging method—boxes—standardizes SOPs for workrooms, theatrical shops, and hospitality refits, saving handling time.
