How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Note NMFC 110520 and Class 60 on the BOL; this is a fixed class for packaged lead wire, so no density calculation is required.
- Package coils or spooled lead wire in sturdy cartons or crates with interior blocking, edge guards, and tight stretch wrap to prevent deformation of the soft metal.
- Palletize low and stable: keep heavy wire packs centered on the pallet, use slip sheets, and band to the skid to stop shifting during LTL cross-docking.
- Keep away from food or absorbent goods and request floor-loading avoidance; lead is dense and soft, so prevent crushing and puncture from forklift tines.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with a fixed Class 60 reduces reclass risk and unexpected billing adjustments.
- Non-hazardous designation broadens carrier options and streamlines transit without HazMat surcharges.
- Dense, compact freight improves cost per pound and cube utilization versus higher-class commodities.
- Clear packaging requirement (“in packages”) strengthens claim defensibility and minimizes handling damage.
