How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Choose sturdy corrugated boxes (32–44 ECT) with interior padding to keep buckles, snaps, and hardware from scuffing other pieces; polybag each item and add desiccants to control humidity.
- Pack by style: coil belts and straps, nest wallets and small cases, and separate handbags with dividers; fill voids so cartons don’t crush or rattle through LTL hubs.
- Palletize cartons square to the pallet, add corner boards and stretch wrap, and mark “Leather Goods, NOI — NMFC 110580, Class 100” to avoid reclass during inspections.
- Keep carton weights manageable (around 40–50 lb), avoid mixing heavy metal hardware with soft goods in the same box, and note branded inner packaging to reduce crush claims.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 100 (no density needed) delivers predictable quotes across wallets, belts, straps, and cut leather parts.
- Boxed-only compliance minimizes reclass fees and dock delays, keeping retail replenishment and eCommerce drops on schedule.
- Better abrasion and moisture control lowers claim rates, protecting margins and preserving brand presentation at delivery.
- Non-hazardous listing eliminates hazmat fees and specialized paperwork, and standard LTL compatibility broadens carrier options for competitive rates.
