Notes
Note 111461: NOTE-Does not apply on materials regulated by the U.S. Department of Transportation as hazardous and required to bear a Hazard Class or Hazard Division label or placard. For classes applicable to such hazardous materials, see provisions elsewhere in this Classification.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Calculate density first. Weigh each case or pallet and divide by its cubic feet to set the correct density-based class within 50–400.
- Match packaging to the beverage type: beer/ale in glass goes in bottle carriers with tops secured; wine or vermouth typically in corrugated boxes or NMFC Packages 1342, 1376, 2297, 2437, or 2444; carbonated alcoholic drinks favor Packages 1376 or 2297 with tight seals and dividers.
- Palletize to protect glass and prevent leaks: use full wrap, corner boards, and layer pads; avoid overhang; mark orientation and apply top-load limits for carbonated products.
- Document clearly: list beverage (beer, wine, vermouth, stout, etc.), container count and size, packaging type, calculated density, and note that no DOT hazard label/placard is required for this item.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Optimize density to lower freight class and reduce LTL rates by improving case fill, right-sizing cartons, and tightening pallet cube.
- Avoid hazmat surcharges and special carrier handling because this article is non-hazardous under DOT labeling rules.
- Cut claims and breakage with compliant carriers/boxes and internal dividers, lowering OS&D and insurance exposure for glass-heavy loads.
- Speed quotes and prevent reclass/rebills by citing NMFC 111460 and aligning packaging to the approved package types for alcoholic beverages.
