How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use the fixed Class 50 rating—no density math. Enter “wooden lath in bundles” on the BOL to prevent reclass delays.
- Reinforce each bundle with banding and corner protectors so thin slats stay aligned; two straps each direction plus stretch wrap works well.
- Load on sturdy 4-way pallets with zero overhang and block/brace to stop spear-like shifting. Keep bundle lengths flush and uniform.
- Shield from moisture if kiln-dried is specified by adding a top sheet or bag. Mark piece count, length, and bundle ID for quick receiving.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable Class 50 pricing helps secure competitive LTL rates versus mixed wood items that rate higher.
- Straightforward classification cuts inspection time and reduces costly reclass fees or documentation disputes.
- Tight, banded bundles stack cleanly, improving trailer cube and lowering cost per delivered slat.
- Clear commodity labeling speeds claims handling and reduces loss from broken or missing slats.
