How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Bundle long members tightly with banding and corner protectors; add dunnage every 4–6 ft for fork access and to prevent sag. Use edge boards on glulam/LVL to avoid strap marks.
- Square the bundle and cap both ends so no pieces overhang. Note actual overall length on the BOL; many carriers apply surcharges beyond 12 ft.
- Wrap laminated wood in breathable poly or kraft with a moisture barrier, and tape over strap contact points. Mark fragile or finish-grade beams as “Top Load Only.”
- Print NMFC 113120 and Class 60 on the BOL, with piece count per bundle and total weight. This speeds inspections and helps avoid reclass or delay.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 60 simplifies quotes and can beat density-based pricing for dense glulam and LVL components.
- Accurate NMFC on paperwork reduces reclass fees and keeps framing and roofing schedules on track.
- Unitized bundles cut handling touches and damage, lowering OS&D claims on custom-cut rafters and joists.
- Clear length disclosure prevents extreme-length fees and re-delivery, preserving margins on contractor drop-offs.
