How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Unitize straight shafts in tight bundles using steel or polyester banding with 2x4 runners; keep ends flush to prevent fork punctures.
- If creosoted or otherwise treated, line bundles with poly sheeting and cap the ends; add absorbent layer to prevent staining on trailers.
- Plan for length: book long-freight accessorials for pieces over 96 inches and choose carriers with conveyors or side-handling for 10–14 ft bundles.
- On paperwork, describe as “wooden shafts, in the rough,” note preservative treatment, and use fixed Class 50—no density required.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 50 delivers predictable LTL pricing for long, slender wood pieces—no density calculations or reweigh surprises.
- Simple, single-item classification reduces reclass risk and administrative time, speeding quotes and tendering for mills and fabricators.
- Proper bundling improves cross-dock handling, cutting damage and claims on unfinished shafts that can scuff or split if loose.
- Works for tool-handle blanks, flagpole stock, and agricultural shafts, lowering per-piece freight costs when shipped in consolidated packs.
