Notes
Note 114029: NOTE-Applies on articles such as those used in wastewater treatment ponds or aquatic farming ponds.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Calculate the class by density: weigh the packaged unit and divide by its cubic feet. Example: 420 lb in a 48 x 40 x 28 in crate ≈ 31.1 cu ft, 420/31.1 = 13.5 PCF.
- Package to Item 170: secure impellers and motors, brace or nest any float pods, and palletize or crate to eliminate protrusions and prevent roll or shift.
- Prepare equipment for transit: drain water and oils, cap intake/outlet ports, protect electronics and seals from corrosion, and cover sharp edges or hardware.
- Label handling points clearly: mark center of gravity and lift points, and instruct crews not to lift by flotation devices or shrouds.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Density-based rating lets you optimize packaging for higher PCF, often yielding a lower class and reduced LTL charges.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and streamlines paperwork for water, wastewater, aquaculture, and industrial sites.
- Compliance with Item 170 and Note 114029 minimizes reclass/reweigh fees, shortens dock time, and cuts claim risk.
- Clear NMFC 114028 identification speeds quoting and contract alignment for OEMs, distributors, and municipal procurement teams.
