Notes
Note 114051: NOTE-Also applies on accompanying tools necessary for the adjustment and operation of the agricultural implement with which shipped.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the item is a non-hand agricultural implement (e.g., planter, plow, cutter, spreader, hay press, windrow pickup, silo unloader, feed mill) or its parts before assigning NMFC 114050.
- Prepare for LTL by skidding or crating: cap hydraulic ports, guard PTO shafts and cutter edges, and band to 4-way pallets for forklift access; tow-behind units need wheel chocks and hitch locks.
- Reduce size and risk by removing protrusions like augers, coulters, seed boxes, or discharge chutes; wrap gearboxes and meters, then label as machinery to guide terminal handling.
- For oversized or high-profile implements (planters, driers), request partial truckload or protect with framed crates; measure overall footprint including hitches and tires to avoid reweigh/reclass.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Broad coverage under one NMFC item streamlines quotes across varied farm implements and attachments, cutting time in procurement and carrier negotiations.
- Purposeful packaging (skidded vs. crated, partial disassembly) can lower billed weight and dimension-based charges, reducing total freight spend.
- Better protection of gearboxes, meters, and blades lowers claim risk on high-value machinery, improving insurance outcomes and uptime during planting/harvest windows.
- Compliant securement for tow-behind units prevents refused pickups and delays, supporting predictable delivery to dealers and growers.
