How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC Item 114135 on the BOL and specify packaging as boxed or crated; include exact length and weight so carriers can assess any overlength fees (e.g., 84 in).
- For heated models with coils and controls, choose wood crating or reinforced double-wall cartons with foam end-caps; block the blower housing and cover terminals.
- Palletize long boxes on full-length skids or two parallel runners to prevent fork punctures; band every 24-30 inches and mark Keep Upright and Do Not Stack.
- When shipping multiple units, add corner boards and a top frame, and keep them away from heavy steel parts to avoid crushing the sheet-metal housings.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Correct NMFC usage minimizes reclass disputes and surprise invoice adjustments, keeping quotes aligned with actual LTL charges.
- Improved packaging for long, narrow equipment cuts damage to motors and heating elements, reducing claim costs and customer returns.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines carrier selection and avoids hazmat surcharges or special paperwork, shortening tender time.
- Explicit length notes help avoid overlength or linear-foot accessorials, or allow you to negotiate them up front for predictable costs.
