How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the unit is shipped dry: drain fuel lines, purge vapors, cap all ports, and note “dry, non-haz” on the BOL with NMFC 114150.
- Crate or heavy-box the frame and secure it to a skid using bolts or steel banding; block meter heads and hose reels to prevent vibration damage.
- Protect protrusions—nozzles, meters, and control panels—with foam, edge guards, and a plywood shield; disconnect or remove the battery and cover electricals.
- Mark lift points and center of gravity on the crate; list Class 100 on paperwork. Carriers may still request weight and dimensions for accurate LTL pricing.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 100 provides predictable rating, simplifying quote comparisons and budgeting for airport operations and GSE providers.
- Non-hazardous when shipped dry, reducing hazmat fees, documentation time, and potential carrier refusals.
- Proper crating/skidding minimizes damage to pumps, meters, and reels, cutting claim risk and costly downtime at the ramp.
- Accurate NMFC 114150 usage reduces reclass and inspect fees, speeding dock handling and improving on-time performance.
