How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Ship units dry: remove propane cylinders, regulators, and any fuel. Cap lines and note “No fuel included” on the BOL to avoid hazmat delays.
- Stabilize the wheeled base inside the box. Chock or zip-tie wheels and pad burner wands so they can’t pierce the carton during transit.
- Use double-wall boxes with internal foam or honeycomb blocking. Mark “This Side Up” to protect torches and burner assemblies from impact.
- For multiple boxes, band to a pallet and shrink-wrap. List model, burner count, and total piece count on paperwork for faster carrier processing.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Non-hazardous status helps avoid hazmat surcharges and special handling fees, keeping LTL costs predictable.
- Boxed packaging reduces OS&D risk on delicate burner/torch hardware, lowering claims and replacement expenses.
- Clear item identification speeds rating and minimizes reclass penalties, improving quote accuracy and transit planning.
- Palletized multi-box shipments consolidate handling, often yielding better per-unit rates and smoother dock workflows.
