How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Prevent corrosion: wrap cast-iron components with VCI paper or poly, add desiccant packs, then seal inside the box or crate to keep moisture out.
- Restrain the weight: use double-wall cartons with foam-in-place or dense corner pads for boxed units; for crates, add 4x4 skids, internal blocking, and screw-fastened cleats.
- Palletize smartly: place cartons or small crates on a 48x40 pallet, band in two directions and stretch-wrap to the deck; mark heavy sides and forklift entry points.
- Document clearly: list “Air Humidifiers, cast iron – NMFC 114320, Class 85” on the BOL, specify boxed or crated, and include piece count for smooth LTL handling.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: fixed Class 85 reduces reclass inspections and surprise charges for metal-bodied humidifiers.
- Lower claim exposure: rigid packaging and proper blocking protect heavy cast iron parts, cutting damage risk and admin time.
- Faster quoting and tendering: one NMFC and non-hazardous status streamline carrier acceptance and scheduling.
- Smarter mode selection: a known class enables clean LTL vs partial TL comparisons when shipping multiple crated units.
