How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Select packaging to match the class: boxed or crated mills commonly rate lower than loose units. Use a heavy skid, lag-screw the base, and brace motors and housings.
- Protect food-contact paths. Remove and bag hoppers, screens, and burr sets; cap inlets/outlets and overwrap with clean poly to prevent contamination during transit.
- Stabilize for LTL handling. Mark center of gravity, add tip-and-shock indicators, and block the frame inside a crate. Example: 48x40 or larger pallet with 4-way entry.
- Plan access at bakeries or plants. Note liftgate needs, limited receiving hours, and inside delivery on the BOL along with NMFC 114350 and the chosen packaging type.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Target the better rate: crated or boxed mills typically achieve a lower class than loose, reducing LTL base charges without changing service speed.
- Cut risk and claims: rigid blocking, moisture protection, and food-safe covers prevent damage and contamination that lead to downtime or rework.
- Avoid reclass fees: documenting NMFC 114350 with clear packaging details on the BOL limits inspections and surprise billing.
- Streamline compliance: non-hazardous machinery widens carrier options and simplifies paperwork, accelerating quotes and pickups.
