How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Note the material and format on the BOL, e.g., “anti‑friction bearing balls, steel, in boxes,” or “bearing rolls, ceramic, in drums,” to prevent reclass or inspection delays.
- Use rigid cartons with dividers or fiber/steel drums with lids; line with VCI paper and add desiccant to protect precision surfaces from moisture and brinelling.
- Palletize tightly: band or stretch‑wrap boxes, chock and strap drums, keep center of gravity low, and label heavy pallets to avoid tip‑overs during LTL handling.
- Record accurate counts and weights; even without a set class, carriers will ask for total weight and piece count. Example: 4 fiber drums, 12" x 20" each, 950 lb total.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Reduce reclass fees by clearly identifying anti‑friction bearing balls/rolls and packaging (boxes or drums) tied to NMFC 114690.
- Lower damage risk and claims through corrosion control, separators, and secured drums—critical for high‑precision bearing elements.
- Faster dock throughput and fewer accessorials when pallets are stable, labeled heavy, and easy to move with standard LTL equipment.
- Cleaner rate shopping and quicker quotes since the item is non‑hazardous and consistently described across shipments.
