Notes
Note 114722: NOTE-Applies on concrete mixing barrels, bodies, drums, hoppers or tanks for concrete mixers designed for mounting on truck chassis.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Select NMFC 114720 when booking revolving concrete mixer barrels, bodies, hoppers, or tanks; note “revolving type” on the BOL to match the tariff note.
- Block and brace the drum in a wood or steel cradle, then band to a skid to prevent rolling; protect gear rings, flanges, and ports with edge guards.
- Cap inlets/outlets and wrap open faces to keep abrasive dust out; add corrosion inhibitor paper for bare steel to limit surface rust during transit.
- Measure overall length and maximum diameter for quoting; request forklift or crane loading accessorials if the unit exceeds standard pallet handling.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 125 simplifies rating—no density breaks—reducing reclass and dispute risk for mixer components.
- Clear NMFC mapping speeds quotes and booking, improving cycle time for service shops, OEMs, and ready-mix fleets.
- Damage prevention guidance (cradles, banding, edge protection) lowers OS&D, claims exposure, and downtime costs.
- Consistent classification supports multi-stop LTL consolidation of drums, hoppers, and related mixer parts for better freight efficiency.
