NMFC Description Class

Notes

Note 114732: NOTE-Applies on kits, consisting of barrels, liners or sleeves with complement of pistons, piston rings, ring expanders, wrist pins or pin retainer fittings in same inner container.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Verify the parts meet the scope: internal combustion engine or pump barrels/liners/sleeves, or qualifying kits per Note, item 114732. Print NMFC 114730, Class 85 on the BOL.
  2. Use boxes with double-wall corrugate and foam end-caps or molded inserts to protect machined bores. Wrap each piece in VCI paper or apply light oil and add plastic end caps.
  3. For kits, bag small components (seals, O-rings, clips) separately and partition the box. Include a contents sheet that matches the kit part number to prevent count disputes.
  4. Palletize multiple boxes as a single handling unit with cornerboards and strapping. Mark Heavy/Do Not Drop, and avoid top-stacking to prevent distortion of precision surfaces.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 85 simplifies quoting and reduces reclassification risk—no density calculations or dimensional audits needed for these boxed metal parts.
  • Carrier-friendly box packaging lowers damage frequency versus loose metal, limiting claims and minimizing accessorials tied to special handling.
  • Shipping complete liner or sleeve kits cuts touch time at the dock and consolidates freight bills, improving throughput for engine rebuilders and pump service centers.
  • Non-hazardous status eliminates hazmat fees and paperwork, speeding LTL tendering and enabling wider carrier options at competitive rates.
