How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify the set qualifies: ship the operator mechanism and gate arm together in a sealed box or crate, and list both components on the BOL to match NMFC 114733.
- Limit overlength fees by detaching or sectionalizing the gate arm; pad and cap ends, then brace diagonally inside the crate to prevent flex and cracking.
- Bolt the operator cabinet to a skid or pallet and band in two directions; mark This Side Up to protect motors, controllers, and gearboxes during handling.
- Plan accessorials for site jobs: request liftgate and delivery appointment, and provide longest piece length and package count to avoid reweigh/reclass.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable costs with fixed Class 77.5—no density needed—reducing rating disputes and invoice audits.
- Boxed or crated packaging aligns with the item, cutting damage risk versus blanket-wrap and improving claim outcomes.
- Detaching or using sectional arms minimizes overlength surcharges and opens more carrier options for faster tendering.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines paperwork and accelerates LTL processing, helping projects stay on schedule.
