How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Bundle loose bars with steel strapping over wood dunnage, or place packaged bars on skids with forklift clearance for safe LTL handling.
- Add edge protectors and cap sharp bar ends; this reduces strap cuts, carrier damage claims, and handling injuries during cross-dock moves.
- Mark bundles with count, length, and “Log Turner Bars—Steel.” Show NMFC 114745, Class 70, and note “loose” or “packages” clearly on the BOL.
- Apply light oil or VCI wrap to combat rust in damp mill corridors and terminals; separate oily bars from fiber-based packaging to avoid staining.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 removes density checks, speeding quotes and keeping rating predictable for mill replenishment orders.
- Non-hazardous steel parts streamline carrier acceptance and avoid hazmat surcharges, simplifying budgeting.
- Flexible packaging—loose or in packages—fits real-world sawmill shipping rhythms, reducing prep time and labor.
- Single NMFC item and class minimize reclass fees, cut claim risk, and stabilize LTL costs across lanes.
