How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the item is a plain/sleeve or journal bearing (not ball or roller) and note the total shipment weight to place it in the correct of the two weight-based classes.
- Use sturdy boxes or packages with dividers; bag parts in VCI or oil-resistant sleeves to shield precision surfaces from corrosion and grit during LTL handling.
- Group small bushings in inner packs, label counts and net weight, and then double-wall box heavier lots; palletize boxed units only after inner packaging meets carrier standards.
- List material type (bronze, sintered iron, steel, PTFE-lined) on the BOL and mark “Non-hazardous” to streamline tendering and avoid unnecessary hazmat steps.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Weight-based classification with two breaks lets you consolidate orders to hit the more favorable class and reduce landed cost.
- Proper boxed or packaged protection lowers damage rates on precision bores, cutting claim risk and downstream production delays.
- Clear labeling and accurate weights prevent reclass and inspection fees, improving invoice accuracy and protecting margins.
- Non-hazardous status eliminates hazmat surcharges and paperwork, speeding dock turns and improving LTL carrier acceptance.
