How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the metal is non-ferrous (e.g., aluminum, copper, brass, zinc) and not iron or steel before assigning NMFC 114870, Class 77.5.
- Package in rigid boxes or sturdy wrapped bundles that weigh at least 25 lb each; weigh and mark every individual package to meet the threshold.
- Palletize tight: center heavy boxes on a 48x40 pallet, use steel or poly strapping with edge protectors, and avoid overhang to prevent crush damage.
- Protect surfaces from abrasion and moisture—use VCI wrap or liner, corner guards, and dense dunnage for items like 6061 plate stacks or copper bar bundles.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable LTL spend with a fixed Class 77.5—no density calculation required.
- Lower reclass and fee risk by hitting the 25 lb-per-package rule and using compliant boxes or bundles.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and simplifies tendering and facility acceptance.
- Streamlined quoting and claims defensibility for metal suppliers, machine shops, and auto/aero parts makers shipping blanks, billets, or cut-to-size pieces.
