How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify each package weighs at least 25 lb to meet this item’s Class 60 criteria; include a scale ticket when boxes are close to the threshold.
- Protect sharp points: cap the tips, wrap in VCI/oil paper, and nest parts in heavy-duty cartons or pails with dense dunnage (e.g., foam blocks) to prevent movement.
- Palletize stoutly using hardwood pallets, steel or heavy poly banding, and edge protectors; keep loads square with no overhang and mark multiple sides as HEAVY.
- Write the full line on the BOL: “Coal cutting machine steel bits, packaged ≥25 lb each, NMFC 114960, Class 60, non-hazardous,” and avoid mixing with lighter accessories that could change the class.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Class 60 rating delivers lower LTL rates than many tooling parts, reducing per-shipment freight spend.
- Packaging at 25 lb+ per package minimizes reclassification risk and eliminates costly carrier adjustments.
- Non-hazardous designation streamlines booking and avoids hazmat surcharges and paperwork delays.
- Damage-resistant packing keeps cutting points intact, fewer claims and downtime for mining operations.
