How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Stabilize moving parts before packing: lock out conveyors, secure arms and guides, cap electrical boxes, and pad sensors to prevent impact damage in transit.
- Choose the right packaging: bolt machinery to a skid for short hauls, or fully crate with blocking and corner boards for longer LTL moves and export routes.
- Distribute weight evenly and mark lift points; allow 4-way forklift access and add ‘This Side Up’ and center-of-gravity labels to reduce handling errors.
- List as NMFC 115360, Class 85 on paperwork; include piece count, packaging type (box, crate, or skid), and photos of packaging to streamline inspections.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with a fixed Class 85 rating—no density calculations, fewer reclass surprises, and faster quoting for bottling-line shipments.
- Lower claim risk when crated or skid-mounted properly, protecting belts, rollers, and control panels on bottle case and washer loaders.
- Minimize downtime for beverage plants and CPG facilities by shipping replacement loaders/unloaders quickly via widely accepted non-hazmat LTL service.
- Single classification across variants simplifies procurement, consolidations, and carrier selection for nationwide rollouts or line upgrades.
