How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Secure to a pallet or steel skid using heavy banding and edge protectors; block and brace to prevent sliding of solid steel plates or blocks.
  2. If assemblies include attachments, remove hydraulic cylinders and ship separately; cap ports and bag bolts, pins, or wear shims to keep kits together.
  3. Mark the BOL: “Steel pushing buffer/plate—tractor or grader parts—NMFC 115450—Class 65—non-hazardous.” Density not required, but list piece count and total weight.
  4. Protect sharp edges and faces with guards or plywood; avoid stacking heavy plates that could deform brackets. Request forklift or liftgate when no dock is available.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 65 simplifies rating and reduces reclass risk versus generic “machinery parts.”
  • Lower landed costs for heavy steel components compared to higher-class assumptions, improving LTL rate predictability.
  • Clear scope—steel buffers/plates, not hydraulic cylinders—prevents disputes and shortens carrier inspections.
  • Non-hazardous status streamlines carrier selection and avoids hazmat surcharges or paperwork delays.
