How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the item truly fits NOI: bookkeeping machines and their parts not otherwise listed. Box the unit or components first, then palletize the carton if needed for safer LTL handling.
- Stabilize delicate mechanisms. Remove paper rolls, lock moving carriages, bag loose fasteners, and use anti-static bags for circuit boards. Heavy items (40–70 lb) do best in double-wall cartons with dense foam blocking.
- Mark orientation and sensitivity. Use “This Side Up” and “Sensitive Instrument” labels, and print NMFC 115800, Class 100 on the BOL to prevent reclass and speed terminal processing.
- Provide dimensions and weight for quotes even though class is fixed. Keep cartons compact to avoid cubic-related charges; band boxed units to a pallet with corner boards if stacking risk is high.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: fixed Class 100 eliminates density calculations, streamlining rating and preventing surprise reclass fees.
- Lower claim risk through compliant boxed packaging, aligning with NMFC expectations for office machinery and protecting delicate internals.
- Faster operations for refurbishers, service depots, and accounting departments—standardized boxing makes repeat shipments simple and scalable.
- Broader carrier acceptance and fewer accessorials versus awkward, unboxed equipment, improving transit options and freight spend.
