How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm each door or panel is steel at 18 gauge or thicker; note gauge or a caliper reading on specs if close to the limit.
- Package as cartons or crated packages with edge protectors and foam on corners; cover handles or louvers and band the package to a pallet with no overhang.
- Print the exact BOL line: “Doors or Panels, data processing machine, steel, 18 ga or thicker, in packages — NMFC 115910, Class 77.5.”
- Quote and tender at Class 77.5 without density; include piece count, pallet count, and overall dimensions for handling and to avoid oversize fees.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value

- Non-hazardous commodity broadens carrier options and simplifies paperwork, speeding up LTL tendering.
- Clear packaging rule (“in packages”) streamlines prep and standardizes packing across plants, lowering labor and material costs.
- Reduced damage risk with proper edge and hardware protection, cutting OS&D claims and avoiding downtime for IT enclosure deployments.
