Notes

Note 116051: NOTE-Applies only when the articles are used, and have value not exceeding the value for reconditioning or salvaging, and only when described at time of shipment on shipping orders and bills of lading as 'used postage meters.' Used postage meters which have been reconditioned or rebuilt in any way will be classified under the provisions of item 115960.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Confirm eligibility: these are decommissioned postage meters kept for repair or raw material recovery (per Note, item 116051). Include any deactivation or return-to-manufacturer paperwork.
  2. Choose packaging listed for this item: sturdy boxes for single units with foam blocking, or wood crates for multiple units, heavier bases, or long-haul moves.
  3. Stabilize internals and protrusions. Lock moving parts, cap ports, and use anti-static wrap on control panels to protect delicate electronics during LTL handling.
  4. Label clearly: “For Reconditioning/Reclamation – NMFC 116050, Class 92.5.” Place labels on two sides and the top; if palletized, ensure labels remain visible.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Predictable pricing: fixed Class 92.5 removes density calculations, speeding quotes and reducing reweigh/reclass disputes.
  • Compliance assurance: shipping under the specific refurb/reclaim item streamlines OEM, recycler, and mailroom audit trails.
  • Damage mitigation: using boxes or crates as specified helps prevent electronic shock damage and protects residual value.
  • Operational efficiency: clear classification simplifies consolidations of retired units from multiple sites into a single LTL move.
