How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the correct subclass under NMFC 116640 before booking; ratings commonly vary by condition (assembled vs. knocked down) or whether a drive/motor is included.
- Choose packaging by unit size and fragility: crate and bolt standard machines to a skid, box smaller subassemblies, or ship loose only when oversized and fully blocked and braced.
- Prep the duster for transport: drain product residue, cap intake/exhaust ports, secure belts and brushes, protect shafts and sensor housings, and wrap food-contact surfaces with clean poly.
- Note that it’s not density-based; class stays within 150–200, but accurate weight and dimensions help avoid capacity or overlength fees. Mark center of gravity and “This Side Up.”
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Using the correct 150–200 class prevents reclass fees and surprise invoice adjustments on LTL moves.
- Crating and proper blocking sharply cut damage risk to motors, housings, and brush assemblies, reducing downtime at the mill.
- Non-hazardous status widens carrier options and can improve transit choices and pricing flexibility.
- Right-size skids and consolidated crates limit handling, reduce overlength and accessorial charges, and speed docks-to-floor installation.
