Notes
Note 117024: NOTE-Also applies when sprocket wheels weighing 25 pounds or more are shipped loose or in packages.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify the parts are iron and shipped in boxes to match NMFC 117020; consult the note for item 117024 if applicability is in doubt.
- Wrap teeth and chain links with edge guards or foam, use dividers, and tape or band boxes so sharp sprocket profiles cannot punch through.
- Keep each box manageable; under ~75 lb is ideal. For heavier sets, upgrade to double‑wall cartons and secure boxed units to a pallet while retaining the boxed requirement.
- On the BOL list: NMFC 117020, Class 60, non-hazmat, piece count, and exact part names (e.g., sprocket wheels, sprocket chains). Provide box dims/weights to smooth carrier planning.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 60 removes density guesswork, cutting reclass fees on mixed shipments of chains and sprocket wheels.
- Faster, more predictable LTL quotes support MRO replenishment and OEM order cycles for conveyors, ag equipment, and power transmission lines.
- Iron parts in sturdy boxes reduce the need for costly crating, lowering packaging spend and damage claims.
- Consistent NMFC usage improves audit compliance and streamlines billing, shaving admin time from traffic and logistics teams.
