How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Choose packaging to match the unit: double-box bench analyzers with foam-in-place, or crate floor models with shock-absorbing mounts and a pallet base.
- Purge and cap: remove milk samples and any reagents, drain lines, cap fluid ports, and bag probes and tubing to prevent residue and odor during transit.
- Control handling: mark Keep Upright and Fragile Electronics, add tilt/shock indicators, and secure the box or crate to a skid to avoid conveyor tip-overs.
- Document and protect: record serial numbers and calibration certificates, photograph packing, and use 2 in. clearance of dense foam on all sides for impact resistance.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 rating removes density guesswork, yielding faster, predictable LTL quotes for dairy labs and equipment suppliers.
- Boxed or crated allowance lets you balance cost and protection, reducing damage to sensitive optics, sensors, and control boards.
- Non-hazardous classification widens carrier options and cuts paperwork, accelerating pickups for time-critical quality testing.
- Accurate NMFC use minimizes reclass and inspection fees, stabilizing freight rates and lowering total landed cost on new installs and returns.
