How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Choose packaging that aligns to the lower class. Heavy frames crated and bolted to skids typically rate better than lightly packaged units within the 65–85 range.
- Protect wear parts and tooling: cap hydraulic ports, wrap augers/extrusion screws, and use VCI/moisture barrier inside boxes or crates to prevent rust during transit.
- Engineer handling points. Add forklift pockets or 4-way skids, mark center of gravity, and secure with blocking and banding to stop tip-over of tall brick or tile machines.
- Document clearly on the BOL: “NMFC 117600, machinery, crated/boxed,” include serial numbers and photos. Carriers will still verify weight and cube even though class isn’t density-based.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Optimize freight spend by qualifying for the lower end of Class 65–85 through robust crating and proper unitization.
- Avoid costly reclass/reweigh fees with precise NMFC 117600 notation and accurate packaging descriptors that match the tariff.
- Accelerate booking and expand carrier options since the freight is non-hazardous and fits standard LTL machinery handling.
- Cut downtime risk at the jobsite or plant by reducing damage claims—rigid crates, internal blocking, and VCI preserve machine alignment and finishes.
