How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Package rough cast iron/steel parts in sturdy crates or on metal-banded pallets; cushion with hardwood dunnage to prevent chipping of edges and bosses.
- Note allowable prep on paperwork: fins, sinker heads, and gates removed; parts may be annealed, cleaned, or tumbled; bolt holes made but not threaded.
- Distribute weight low and centered; avoid pallet overhang and use corner protectors under steel banding so heavy castings don’t cut through wrap.
- Print NMFC 117670, Class 65, and “Non-Hazardous – Rough Castings” on labels; keep items in packages only (no loose pieces) for carrier acceptance.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 65 for packaged rough castings helps secure predictable LTL rates versus density-based items, improving budgeting for maintenance spares.
- Accurate NMFC use reduces reclass/inspection fees and avoids delays for mining, cement, or ceramics plants relying on crusher uptime.
- Rugged packaging lowers damage risk on brittle cast edges, cutting claims and replacement costs on heavy components.
- Clear documentation (“holes unthreaded,” annealed/cleaned allowed) speeds dock handling and boosts carrier acceptance for heavy machinery freight.
