Classification Details

NMFC Description Class
118097.00 Compressor Units or Air Ends, rotary screw compressor, used, NOI, having value only for the salvage of parts, actual value not exceeding 50 cents per pound, in packages, see Note, item 118098 65

Notes

Note 118098: NOTE-Shipper must certify on shipping orders and bills of lading at time of shipment that the actual value does not exceed 50 cents per pound. If the shipper fails to certify the actual value, charges will initially be assessed under the provisions of item 118100. Upon proof of lower actual value, freight charges will be adjusted accordingly.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Verify salvage-only status and document actual value at or below $0.50 per pound. Separate any rebuildable or higher-value compressors to avoid reclass and inspection fees.
  2. Drain oil and coolant, cap all ports, and bag loose parts. Keep heavy rotors and air ends secured so nothing shifts or leaks during transit.
  3. Package as a unitized load: bolt or band to a 4‑way pallet, add corner protectors, shrink-wrap, and block/bracket awkward shapes. Use a crate for fragile housings.
  4. On the BOL, list NMFC 118097, Class 65, “Used Rotary Screw Compressor Air Ends—Salvage Only,” and note “Non-hazardous, fluids drained.” Review Note, item 118098 for packaging/verification details.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 65 can outperform general machinery classes, reducing LTL spend for salvage movements from OEMs, MRO shops, and recyclers.
  • Salvage-only designation aligns carrier liability with low material value, helping contain claims exposure and simplifying risk approvals.
  • Accurate paperwork and packaging reduce reclassifications, inspections, and OS&D claims, cutting avoidable fees and delivery delays.
  • Unitized, safe-to-handle freight moves faster through terminals, enabling tighter pickup windows and more predictable dock operations.
