Notes
Note 119042: NOTE-Applies whether or not the shaft has been balanced.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use NMFC 119040 at Class 85 for finished crankshafts or camshafts; select “loose” or “packages” to match your packing method and consult NMFC Note 119042 for finished criteria.
- If shipping loose, mount each shaft on timber cradles or a steel rack and band to a 4‑way pallet; protect journals with VCI wrap, end caps, and edge guards—never tension straps directly on machined surfaces.
- For packaged shipments, build a braced crate with blocking that keeps counterweights off the deck; add oil-resistant liners, rust inhibitor, and mark center of gravity and no‑fork zones.
- On the BOL, state piece count, material (forged steel or cast iron), and non‑hazardous status; request forklift or liftgate if high point loads or long lengths require special handling.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable rating: fixed Class 85 with no density calculation speeds quotes and reduces reclass charges.
- Packaging flexibility: shipping loose or packaged lets you avoid unnecessary crating costs while staying compliant.
- Lower damage risk: protecting finished journals and lobes cuts claims and keeps engine rebuild schedules on time.
- Carrier acceptance: correct NMFC usage and clear handling notes minimize exception fees and accessorial surprises.
