How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Put the exact description on the BOL: “Crusher, Breaker or Grinder Parts, coal, ore or stone, NOI — NMFC 119100, Class 55.” Do not rate by density.
- Secure heavy wear parts with blocking and steel banding on hardwood skids; add edge protectors. Example: bolt manganese jaw plates to the skid with VCI wrap, crate loose bolts.
- Distribute weight evenly and keep center of gravity low. For long shafts or screen frames, use two skids bridged with 2x4 cross-members to prevent flex and pallet failure.
- Protect machined faces and liners with oil or caps, then shrink or poly wrap. Clean off stone/ore fines so carriers accept the freight and neighboring cargo stays clean.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 55 delivers predictable LTL rates and reduces costly reclass disputes versus density-based ratings.
- Non-hazardous status expands carrier choices and speeds tenders for quarry and mine maintenance timelines.
- Proper blocking/bracing minimizes claims on brittle liners and castings, cutting downtime from replacement delays.
- Clear NMFC labeling streamlines quotes across brokers and TMS platforms, improving routing and transit reliability.
