How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pack iron or steel parts in heavy-duty, double-wall boxes with rigid blocking. Cap coolant and oil passages on cylinder heads, then wrap with VCI paper or oil-treated wrap to prevent corrosion.
- Use dividers or custom foam to isolate pistons; bag each unit and shield ring lands from abrasion. Keep per-box weights manageable (often under 75 lb) to avoid liftgate or accessorial surprises.
- Prepare shock absorbers by protecting the rod and seals with guards or spacers; pack upright with reinforced end-cushioning so impacts don’t side-load the shaft.
- Label boxes with NMFC 119140 and Class 60, list part counts, and indicate Iron/Steel Auto Parts. Unitize on a pallet with edge protectors and a top sheet to enable safe stacking.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with a fixed Class 60: fewer reclass charges and faster quotes for rebuilders, OEMs, and distributors.
- Dense iron/steel components ship efficiently at Class 60, improving cost per pound and reducing cube-related surcharges on LTL moves.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines tendering and documentation, accelerating pickup scheduling and carrier acceptance.
- Boxed packaging compliance reduces handling risk and claims, protecting precision-machined surfaces and minimizing downtime in repair cycles.
