How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Cushion signal light assemblies and control leads inside each box with foam or bubble to prevent lens cracks and connector damage.
- Immobilize hooks and mounting brackets so they cannot pierce the carton; bag loose anchors, sensors, and manuals in a sealed pouch.
- Keep cartons upright and clearly mark “Mechanical Trailer Restraint—With Signal Lights”; include box count and unit model on the BOL.
- For multi-carton orders, strap boxed units to a pallet with edge protectors to reduce shifting while preserving the boxed classification.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 removes density calculations, cutting reclass and dispute risk.
- Predictable rating enables cleaner LTL cost forecasting and carrier rate benchmarking.
- Non-hazmat status avoids hazmat fees and accelerates carrier acceptance and tendering.
- Standard boxed packaging streamlines cross-dock handling and reduces damage-related claims.
